Green Dog WalkersGreen Dog Walkers schemes have been quite successful in their rollout in many councils around the UK and Ireland. Falkirk Council who initiated the scheme in conjunction with the Green Community Initiative have seen over a 50% drop in dog fouling.
Cardiff Council have now adapted their own version of this in English and Welsh ('Leave Only Pawprints'), but this and next page will show all the background and some of research. |
Background researchMany councils in the UK and Ireland have moved forward with some interesting anti-dog fouling schemes. Some are very matter of fact in outlining what the council wants from dog owners and other councils promoting dog ownership in a more friendly way.
During the consultation for PSPOs Cardiff Dog Action felt the time was right now for all those responsible dog owners/walkers to do something in their local areas to work towards these aims. Cardiff Dog Action researched the various options that could be found around the UK and Ireland shown in Moving Forward: Dog Friendly Cardiff (and appendices). They could be implemented at low or minimal cost and have been trialled in various parts of the UK (and in some cases Ireland) and have helped to reduce dog fouling. This was presented to the council during the Scrutinies.
As a result, the council encouraged by dog owners' who were keen to improve things in Cardiff, they launched their new 'Leave Only Pawprints' campaign in October.
Leave Only Pawprints, which is based on the successful Green Dog Walkers scheme, is a friendly, non-confrontational way to tackle attitudes and behaviours around dog fouling (see left and below for background to the original Green Dog Walkers scheme and other schemes and research).
